SUPERVISION
Supervision is often defined in accreditation frameworks through requirements such as ratios, qualifications, and availability. In regional and multi-site systems, however, it is a key enabler of education and workforce sustainability, influencing whether training placements can be established and maintained.
In practice, supervision is collaborative and distributed across clinicians, sites, and roles, including local and visiting staff. This reflects the adaptability of regional systems, where supervision is actively coordinated to draw on available expertise.
Supervisor capacity is closely linked to workforce conditions. In high-demand settings, clinicians balance patient care with teaching. When supervision is supported and prioritised, it strengthens trainee confidence, learning, and engagement, while also benefiting service delivery.
Across contexts, supervision strongly shapes trainee experience. Positive supervisory relationships are linked to higher satisfaction, better learning outcomes, and improved retention. Effective supervision in regional and multi-site systems relies on intentional support rather than individual effort alone. This includes providing time, resources, recognition, and systems that enable coordination and continuity. Supervision is most effective when it is deliberately designed, actively supported, and continuously refined to meet the needs of both trainees and services.
MODELS
Every individual supervisors play a critical role. A small number of committed clinicians can enable training and create supportive environments. Their contribution extends beyond clinical oversight to mentorship, guidance, and career support.
There are a range of models available to consider when establishing a supervisory team to support a trainee including local, hybrid, and digitally-enhanced models of delivery.
